workers’ perspectives on energy transitions in britain
The Just Transition Partnership has worked with Dr Ewan Gibbs of the University of Glasgow to publish a new report looking at workers’ perspective on energy transitions in Britain.
The changes in our society and economy from the energy transition are similar to earlier instances of transition in the second half of the twentieth century, when coal was displaced from the centre of British energy production by oil, gas and nuclear power. Then as now, the future of energy workers and their families, communities and regions dependent on fading sectors was at stake. This report uses energy history to develop recommendations for a just transition for workers today. The research comprised interviews with current and former workers and union officials, industry managers and policymakers along with archival records from unions, government and industry.
