What is the Just Transition Partnership?
The Just Transition Partnership advocates for action to meet climate change targets in ways which protect workers livelihoods and make Scotland more equal and inclusive.
In 2016 Friends of the Earth Scotland and the Scottish Trade Union Congress set up the alliance to develop a strategy which would ensure the creation of high quality employment opportunities in the new or expanded sectors which are needed at the core of the transformed Scottish economy. It would embody a number of general principles which can ensure social and economic justice:
- jobs lost will be replaced
- places affected will be protected
- livelihoods will be maintained
- training and re-training will be funded
- measures to tackle disadvantage in the labour market be included
They were joined by the trade unions UNISON, Unite, PCS, University and Colleges Union and the Communication Workers Union; and by WWF Scotland, the New Economics Foundation, Platform and Common Weal. Together they signed the Joint Statement which expressed the shared purposes.
